GM sales up for 2010 Print

One year after refocusing its brand strategy on Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac, Oshawa-based General Motors of Canada posted retail sales growth of 26.4 percent for calendar year 2010, substantially outpacing the broader automotive market. The results were bolstered by strong December retail sales for the four brands, up over 24 percent, and total sales up 16.9 percent on delivery of 20,160 vehicles.

"We are pleased with the strong close in December, which builds on the solid growth momentum we established throughout 2010," said Kevin Williams, president and managing director of GM of Canada. "In particular, our stand-out retail sales performance this year tells us that our new product executions and focus on the customer are hitting the mark with Canadians, which bodes well for continued growth ahead."

Chevrolet car and truck retail sales grew 24 percent in December, led by a record month for the Canadian-built Equinox, recently named an IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2011. Fuel-efficient small cars also performed well, including strong sales for the all-new award-winning Cruze.

Buick continued to increase its momentum, posting retail gains of 42 percent in December. This growth was led primarily by its award-winning cars, up 96 percent, including Regal and LaCrosse.

GMC, led by the Ingersoll-built Terrain, delivered retail sales increases of 22 percent, while Cadillac retail sales grew almost 23 percent, led by the red-hot SRX.

"Our new vehicles are clearly connecting with customers," added Marc Comeau, GM of Canada's vice-president of sales, service and marketing. "We plan to build on this momentum in 2011 as we launch a number of new vehicles perfectly suited to the Canadian market, including the Chevrolet Orlando MPV, the award-winning Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle, and the Chevrolet Sonic small car."

December 2010 Retail Sales Highlights
•    Chevrolet cars delivered another strong month, up almost 39 percent, driven by increases from fuel-efficient small cars like Cruze, AJAC's "Best New Small Car (over $21,000)."
•    Chevrolet crossovers and trucks performed well in December, with Chevrolet Equinox delivering a record month, up 48 percent, and Chevrolet Silverado sales up 12 percent.
•    Buick car sales increased over 96 percent. This was led by LaCrosse, up 82 percent, as well as the all-new Regal, AJAC's "Best New Family Car (over $30,000)."
•    GMC crossovers and trucks also posted gains, with the Ingersoll-built Terrain up 25 percent, and GMC Sierra up almost 22 percent.
•    Cadillac sales were again led by strong customer demand for the SRX, posting 36 percent growth, its twelfth consecutive month of increases.

Total GM fleet and retail sales were up 6.3 percent compared to last December.
