Jump in Oshawa and Whitby housing starts Print

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) released preliminary housing starts for November, and the figures were good news for Oshawa and Whitby.

The total number of starts in the Oshawa Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) increased by 47 per cent from last year to reach 228 units. The combination of strong home starts of both single-detached and multiple-family housing types (which consist of semi-detached, townhouses and apartments) led to the highest monthly total so far this year. Whitby accounted for more than 60 per cent of Oshawa CMA starts.

"The Oshawa area has seen a strong rebound in employment during 2010. Job recovery, along with sustained low interest rates, have lifted demand for new homes and led to stronger new home construction," says Inna Breidburg, Market Analyst with CMHC's Ontario Business Centre.
