Durham Regional Police helicopter Air 1 was used to track down a vehicle after it was stolen in Oshawa Saturday morning.

On Saturday, January 22, 2011 just before 1 a.m., an Oshawa man was filling his blue Saturn passenger car at a gas station near Bloor Street and Simcoe Street South in Oshawa when a man jumped in the vehicle and drove off. As the suspect drove away, the Oshawa man was dragged several feet as he attempted to prevent the theft.

Officers located the vehicle traveling westbound on Kingston Road at Whites Road and two cruisers attempted to box the vehicle in, but it eluded the attempt and sped away to Highway 401.

Police helicopter Air1 began monitoring the vehicle as it proceeded westbound on Highway 401 as ground units maintained a safe distance and turned off their emergency lights. The vehicle entered a subdivision in the Neilson Road and Sheppard Avenue area of Scarborough where the male was arrested.

A 22 year old Toronto man faces numerous charges, including: Theft; Dangerous Driving; Possession of a Controlled Substance; and Impaired Driving.
